"Sacro" means "related to, or associated with," the sacrum. The sacrum is the foundation for the spine. The sacrum is often called the tail bone though this is not exactly correct. "Occipital" means "related to or associated with the occiput. "Occiput" means "the back of the head". So, SOT is a method of normalizing the relationship between the foundation of the spine and the top of the spine. It is this relationship and how these two bones get along with one another, that has been proven to be so important in the normal functioning of the brain and spinal cord.
The word "Technic" is another way of spelling "technique". Either word means "the way to get the job done, scientifically and in a short period of time".
SOT incorporates chiropractic cranial work, similar to craniosacral but faster, that Dr. Julie has trained in both.
Sacro Occipital Technic (SOT) and Cranial Sacral balances tension in Cranium and Sacrum to return the body's nervous system to parasympathetic state to rest, digestion and recover. This is a very gentle technique, developed by Dr. M. B. DeJarnette, DC, DO and an engineer. SOT was developed to align with human structural distortions by using custom designed wedges to balance the pelvis and spine.
The base of any person’s physical structure begins with the pelvis, as it supports the spine, shoulders, legs, and feet. Your internal organs are supported by particular ligaments that connect to the spine and pelvis. Your upper thighs and back muscles, including those responsible for maintaining stability within your neck and shoulders, are all attached to the pelvis. For your body to be able to perform correctly, your pelvis must be balanced at all times to support healthy nerve function. The diagnostic and analysis system of this technique is based on three category systems.
1st category is focused on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and its movement between the sacrum and the occiput. When there is a subluxation between the back of the sacroiliac joint a strain on the spinal and cranial dura will occur and this restricts flow of the CSF.
2nd category focuses on the presence of hypermobility in the sacroiliac joint which leads to instability between the sacrum and ilium. These subluxations lead to neurophysiological dysfunctions and subluxations of the extremities. When category 2 subluxations are not corrected category 3 will result.
3rd category is the result of ongoing compensation of the body due to subluxations in category 2 and 3. When subluxations have reached this category there is compression of nerve roots, stretch syndromes, and potential degenerative issues of the spinal discs.
